Fear of Flying

Recently, we have had a lot of requests from patients asking for diazepam for fear of flying. According to the prescribing guidelines doctors follow (British National Formulary), diazepam is contraindicated (not allowed) in treating phobic states. It also states that "the use of benzodiazepines to treat short-term 'mild' anxiety is inappropriate." The GP practice would be taking a significant legal risk by prescribing against these guidelines. In addition, medications like diazepam make people drowsy and sleepy which can mean their reflexes and reaction times are slower and that they move less in their sleep. This can put people at an increased risk in case of an on-board emergency and also risk of a blood clot. For these reasons, unfortunately we do not recommend prescribing diazepam for fear of flying. We appreciate that patients have a genuine fear of flying or feeling nervous during the flight. Nowadays, many flight companies provide “Fear of flying” courses which support people to overcome their anxieties around flying, helping also in the long-term alleviation of symptoms. This may be more beneficial long term compared to short term relief from a diazepam.

Please see below for links to some of Fear of Flying courses:
